Clinical Formula & Calculation Standard

Official clinical definitions and validated mathematical models

Widmark Pharmacokinetic Alcohol Elimination Model

BAC % = [Alcohol (g) / (Body Weight (g) × r)] × 100 - (β × Hours) (r = 0.68 for men, 0.55 for women; β = 0.015% per hour average elimination rate)

Estimates blood alcohol concentration based on ingested ethanol grams, volume of distribution (r), and hepatic zero-order metabolic degradation (β).

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Stages of Impairment

0.05% – 0.08%Moderate ImpairmentReduced coordination, delayed reaction time, impaired judgmentIllegal driving limit in many nations
0.08% – 0.15%Legally IntoxicatedLoss of balance, speech slurring, impaired speed perceptionIllegal per se driving threshold in US/UK

Clinical Insights & Practical Usage

  • One standard US drink is defined as 14 grams (0.6 fl oz) of pure ethanol (equivalent to 12 oz 5% beer, 5 oz 12% wine, or 1.5 oz 40% spirits).
  • Hours until sober = BAC / 0.015 hours.
