Karvonen Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) & Training Zones

Max HR (Tanaka): 208 - 0.7 × Age | Fox & Haskell: 220 - Age Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) = Max HR - Resting HR Target HR = (HRR × Intensity %) + Resting HR

The Karvonen formula adjusts training intensity based on resting cardiovascular fitness, providing more individualized zones than straight maximum percentage calculations.

Clinical Insights & Practical Usage

  • Average healthy resting heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 bpm (athletes often 40–55 bpm due to vagal tone).
  • Beta-blockers and cardiovascular medications alter heart rate response; target heart rates should be set by a supervising physician.
