Nutritional Support

Nutritional support is a therapeutic intervention for individuals unable to obtain adequate nourishment through standard eating or drinking.

Indications for Support

You may require nutritional support if you experience any of the following:

  • Inability to swallow
  • Appetite-related issues
  • Severe malnutrition
  • Inability to absorb nutrients through the digestive system

Methods of Delivery

Nutritional support is administered through one of the following methods:

  • Intravenous: Delivery via a needle or catheter placed in a vein.
  • Feeding Tube: Delivery through a tube inserted directly into the stomach.

Frequently Asked Questions

nasogastric tube is temporary, inserted through the nose, and suitable for short-term use (days to weeks). A percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube is placed directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall and is ideal for long-term feeding (months to years). Choose PEG for chronic conditions requiring prolonged nutrition support.
Check blood glucose every 4–6 hours and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) daily or more frequently if unstable. Target glucose 140–180 mg/dL, sodium 135–145 mEq/L, potassium 3.5–5.0 mEq/L, magnesium 1.5–2.5 mg/dL, calcium 8.5–10.5 mg/dL. Adjust the TPN formula based on these values.
Enteral feeding is preferred when the gastrointestinal tract is functional, as it supports gut integrity and is less costly. Parenteral nutrition is reserved for cases where the gut is nonfunctional, severely damaged, or when enteral feeding is contraindicated. The decision is based on the patient’s ability to tolerate tube feeds and the risk of complications.
Redness, swelling, pain, drainage, fever, or a foul odor around the tube insertion site are red flags for infection. Also watch for tube dislodgement, blockage, or leakage. If any of these occur, contact your healthcare provider right away.===
