Facial Injuries and Disorders
Facial injuries and disorders can cause significant pain and aesthetic changes, with severe cases impacting essential functions like sight, speech, and swallowing.
Overview
Facial injuries often involve fractures (broken bones), particularly in the nose, cheekbone, and jaw. Beyond physical trauma, various diseases and congenital conditions can lead to facial disorders.
Causes and Conditions
- Nerve diseases: Conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia or Bell's palsy can result in facial pain, spasms, and impaired facial or eye movement.
- Birth defects: These can cause underdeveloped or unusually prominent features, or a lack of facial expression. Cleft lip and palate is a common example of a facial birth defect.
