Cerebellar Disorders
The cerebellum is the area of the brain responsible for coordination and balance, and its dysfunction can lead to significant movement and control issues.
Overview
The cerebellum is activated during complex physical tasks, such as playing the piano or hitting a tennis ball. When this area of the brain is affected by disease or injury, it can lead to several types of problems:
- Cancer
- Genetic disorders
- Ataxias: Movement disorders resulting from a failure of muscle control in the arms and legs.
- Degeneration: Disorders characterized by the wasting away or decrease in size of brain cells.
Treatment
Management of cerebellar disorders is determined by the underlying cause. While some conditions may not have a cure, various treatments are available to help manage and alleviate symptoms.
