Bowel Movement
A bowel movement is the final stage of the digestive process, where the body eliminates waste after absorbing necessary nutrients and fluids.
Understanding Bowel Movements
A bowel movement is the last stop in the movement of food through your digestive tract. Your stool, also called feces, passes out of your body through the rectum and anus. It is composed of what remains after your digestive system—the stomach, small intestine, and colon—absorbs nutrients and fluids from what you eat and drink.
Abnormalities
Sometimes a bowel movement is not normal. Common issues include:
- Diarrhea: Occurs when stool passes through the large intestine too quickly.
- Constipation: Occurs when stool passes through the large intestine too slowly.
- Bowel incontinence: A problem controlling your bowel movements.
Other abnormalities with bowel movements may be a sign of an underlying digestive problem.
