Norovirus Infections

Norovirus is a highly contagious group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis, leading to stomach inflammation and digestive distress.

Overview

Noroviruses are a group of related viruses that cause gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. The virus can spread from person to person, through contaminated food or water, or by touching a contaminated surface. It can be serious, particularly for young children and older adults.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of norovirus infection include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach pain

Other symptoms may include fever, headache, or body aches.

Treatment and Prevention

There is no specific medicine to treat norovirus infections. Treatment focuses on bed rest and consuming plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Proper hand washing and safe food preparation may help prevent infections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Look for dark yellow urine, dizziness, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, or a decrease in urine output to less than six times per day. If you notice any of these, start sipping water or an oral rehydration solution and consider medical evaluation.
Seek care if you have persistent vomiting that prevents oral fluids, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, or if you are a young child, elderly, or have a weakened immune system.
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after bathroom use and before meals. Disinfect surfaces with a bleach‑based cleaner, especially kitchen counters and bathroom fixtures. Avoid sharing utensils, towels, or bedding, and keep ill family members isolated.
People can remain contagious up to 48 hours after symptoms resolve, but the virus can be shed for several weeks, especially in young children and the elderly. It is safest to stay home and avoid close contact until at least 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
