Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to condoms, the only widely available reversible method is the hormonal male contraceptive under clinical trial (combined testosterone and progestin gel or injection), but it is not yet FDA‑approved. Non‑hormonal experimental methods include reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance (RISUG) and Vasalgel, which are injectable polymers that block sperm transport; these are still investigational. For permanent contraception, vasectomy remains the standard, with a high success rate and low complication profile.
Guidelines vary, but most organizations suggest men begin discussing screening with their doctor at age 45 if they have average risk, or at age 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer, are African‑American, or have other risk factors. The typical screening tools are a prostate‑specific antigen (PSA) blood test and, if PSA is elevated, a digital rectal exam (DRE). Some doctors may use a PSA‑density or MRI before recommending a biopsy.
Perform a self‑exam once a month, ideally after a warm shower when the scrotum is relaxed. Gently roll each testicle between the thumb and fingers, feeling for any lumps, firmness, or changes in size. Seek medical attention if you notice a new, painless lump, persistent heaviness, swelling, or a sudden change in shape, as these can signal testicular cancer or infection.
First, optimize cardiovascular health: regular aerobic exercise (150 minutes/week), a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, and weight management. Limit alcohol to moderate levels (≤2 drinks/day) and quit smoking, as nicotine damages blood vessels. Ensure adequate sleep (7–9 hours) and manage stress through mindfulness, counseling, or therapy. Controlling blood sugar and blood pressure also helps, as erectile function is closely linked to vascular health.
